Throughout his distinguished career with the USGA Green Section, John has provided invaluable guidance to superintendents across Florida and beyond, through his course site visits and numerous contributions to turfgrass education and research. His leadership, technical expertise and dedication have advanced our industry in meaningful and lasting ways. This award reflects not only his professional excellence but also the deep respect he has earned throughout the turfgrass community. Congratulations, John, and thank you for a lifetime of impactful service.”

FTGA Vice President Mark Kann joins a chorus of accolades received from industry experts: “I was fortunate to be the USGA Greens Section’s first intern back in 1998 and spent time with John visiting several golf courses in Florida. John and his family were incredibly welcoming, and he was more than willing to share his experiences with me, teaching me quite a bit over a short period of time. We have been friends ever since and enjoy sharing ideas on agronomic issues.

“John’s ability to teach is surpassed by his ability to listen. Other strengths include his attention to detail and ability to form well-thought-out responses and solutions. It was a great experience to watch him in action when dealing with high-level officials at high-level courses. John always had the golf course superintendent’s interest at the top of his priorities. He consistently adapted to the evolving practices and priorities in the golf course industry. He was still able to share those updates through regional seminars and publications, even before the advent of emails or Zoom.

“I’m looking forward to celebrating this award with John and his wife Shelly along with his many colleagues and friends in the turfgrass industry.”

The Florida turfgrass industry has a $5 billion economic impact in the state and provides about 84,000 jobs. (October 16, 2024): The Florida Turfgrass Association (FTGA) has announced that John Wildmon will be honored with the FTGA Wreath of Grass award. Distributed annually since 1960, this award is FTGA’s highest honor and recognizes individuals who have shown outstanding service to the association and the turfgrass industry. The award will be presented at the 71st Annual FTGA Conference in December.

John Wildmon received an early introduction to the world of turf. Until the age of 13, he lived in the middle of the west course of the County Club of Birmingham in a house provided by the club for his father Joe, the greenskeeper, until the family relocated to Florida. Wildmon worked in the turfgrass industry for nearly 50 years. For the better part of that time, he served tirelessly on behalf of the industry, both on and off the job.

While studying for his associate degree from Polk Junior College, he worked his way through school as a night auditor for Howard Johnson’s and as an usher for Nelson Funeral Home. After graduation in 1970, he worked as a factory supervisor making car and aircraft interiors while mowing golf course greens on the weekend for his father, his first introduction to the turfgrass arena. When his father retired from Mountain Lake Country Club, Wildmon was offered the job as assistant golf course superintendent.

After Wildmon married his wife Marie in 1977, he left Mountain Lake to take the superintendent job at Lake Wales Country Club. In 1980, he returned to school at the University of Florida (UF) while he and his wife managed Willow Creek Wholesale Nursery. He graduated with B.S. and M.S. degrees in Ornamental Horticulture with a 3.97 grade point average in 1984. While working on his degrees, Wildmon was supported in part by a general scholarship and by the Florida Turfgrass Association (FTGA), receiving the Florida Turfgrass Research Fund’s Col. Frank Ward Scholarship.

Immediately upon graduation from UF, Wildmon began teaching in the Golf Course and Landscape programs at Lake City Community College, now Florida Gateway College. He served as an advisory member of the FTGA Board of Directors for 16 years as well as chairperson and member of the Conference Committee. John retired from Florida Gateway College after 30 years of teaching.

FTGA Board Member Jimmy Evans says, “John Wildmon is a wonderful example of someone who has devoted his life to not only the Turfgrass Industry but to his students even after graduation.”

FTGA Vice President Eric Dixon reflects on Wildmon’s ability to find the humor in most situations and some of the many ways he went the extra mile for his students. “John Wildmon made learning turfgrass fun! He always had a funny quote or saying to keep students engaged. He called Bermudagrass, ‘Bermooda.’ He regularly said things like ‘I thought about this while driving on country roads eating a Moon Pie and drinking an RC cola.’ He stressed professionalism but also knew how to let the students be themselves. He often had students who weren't the best in a classroom, and he found a way to engage them.

“John led the Turf Club, which included introducing students to the FTGA and the Florida Golf Course Superintendents Association. He taught extra classes for students to learn irrigation auditing or to compete in the national Turf Bowl with the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America. He travelled with students to industry events and helped many get their first job in the turf industry, often from a former student. John has made a lasting impact on the lives and careers of many turf and landscape professionals throughout Florida.”

The Florida turfgrass industry has a $5 billion economic impact in the state and provides about 84,000 jobs. FTGA, founded in 1952, advocates for and promotes the turfgrass industry with research, continuing education, and networking opportunities for turfgrass professionals. (October 15, 2024): The Florida Turfgrass Association is pleased to announce that it has honored the City of Largo with the President’s Award for Environmental Stewardship, specifically for its Largo Golf Course. The award goes to an individual or facility that has excelled in environmental protection while serving as an advocate for sustainability in the turfgrass industry. The city’s advocacy includes promoting the message of environmental stewardship to their staff, their clients and their community. The award will be presented at the 71st Annual FTGA Conference in December.

FTGA President Pat Marsh says, ‘The teamwork and key strategic planning that went into this project is why the Largo Golf Course has been selected for the 2024 award. The many decisions made along the way to control chemical and fertilizer applications, partner with other agencies to build swales and plant aquatic plants both work to improve the water quality and create additional habitat along with continued training of everyone involved set an example for the rest of the industry and entered into our decision as well.”

Largo Golf Course maintains, enhances, tracks and reports scientific findings on its sustainability program with a goal of reducing contaminants in Church Creek which flows into McKay Creek and the Intercoastal Waterway. Operational procedures were changed to improve the area waterways through an ongoing sustainability program, and the city partnered with many state agencies and the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences Pinellas County Extension Office.

The golf course immediately reduced chemical applications by 50 percent. It partnered with its Parks Department to create a bioswale to help slow and impede the flow of stormwater to better infiltrate the ground, to help mitigate excess nutrients from overflowing into the storm water system and into the bay, and to provide habitat and food for native pollinators.

In addition, the Largo Golf Course has made a concerted effort to utilize water management practices to rehabilitate the health of waterways. This program is part of the overall City of Largo Strategic Initiatives pertaining to sustainability. Its Recreation, Parks and Arts Department aligns its Department and Division goals to the overall city initiatives on an annual basis.

The City of Largo recruits and works to retain an innovative workforce that is motivated to exceed customer expectations while focusing on environmental stewardship and sustainability. The city encourages best management practices and other recurring training and supports membership in associations such as Florida Turfgrass Association.

The Florida turfgrass industry has a $5 billion economic impact in the state and provides about 84,000 jobs. (Oct. 18, 2022) — Massey Services and the Florida Turfgrass Association (FTGA) announced that Massey Services Vice President and Director of Quality Assurance, Adam Jones, will be honored with the FTGA Wreath of Grass award. Distributed annually since 1960, this award is FTGA’s highest honor and recognizes individuals who have shown outstanding service to the association and the turfgrass industry.

“Adam has been a tireless advocate for the green industry,” said Mac Carraway, Acting Executive Director for the Florida Turfgrass Association. “His early involvement in the creation of the Environmental Research and Education Foundation (EREF) and his ongoing support and leadership have been absolutely critical to its mission. He has spoken at numerous public hearings regarding green industry issues and has assisted EREF and others with efforts to provide statistical facts regarding green issues. His contributions have made a significant impact on our landscape service, which focuses on an environmentally responsible, agronomic program. We congratulate Adam on this well-deserved recognition.”
Jones becomes the 100th recipient of this award, which will be presented at the association’s 69th Annual Conference at the Omni Champions Gate Resort in Kissimmee, Florida on November 10th.

About Massey Services
Based in Orlando, Florida, Massey Services is one of the nation’s largest and most respected service companies in the pest management industry. (February 1, 2022): The Florida Turfgrass Association Board of Directors is pleased to announce that Mac Carraway, past FTGA president and Wreath of Grass recipient, will serve as acting executive director of the association. Carraway is also current contract executive director of the Environmental Research and Education Foundation and will continue in that role.

Heather Russo Berg is stepping down as executive director and will continue as association manager. Berg will focus her attention on daily operations of the association, member relations as well as continuing her duties as events coordinator and advisor to Florida Turf Digest.

The veteran team of Carraway and Berg will work together for the foreseeable future.

“FTGA President Lance Tibbetts says, “The association is in fine hands with Mac Carraway at the helm, and we are delighted that Heather has agreed to continue as association manager. This move will allow Heather to focus on our members and membership benefits, while Mac keeps the FTGA heading down the right path as we come out of the post-Covid economy. The board and I are very excited about the association’s future.”

Carraway says, “I’m honored that the FTGA Board has entrusted me with this opportunity to serve the members of the FTGA as its acting executive director. The association has been an important part of my professional life as a past president and as an active member, for many years. The FTGA has been and remains an important force in serving all of the green industry, and I look forward to working with Heather and the board to continue that legacy.”

Berg is looking forward to the transition and says, “I am grateful that the board of directors has allowed me to step back into my former role. I look forward to focusing my attention back on member retention and recruitment. The past two years have been difficult for businesses and associations and being the sole full-time employee has not allowed me to concentrate on all needs of the association and our members.
LAKELAND, Fla., Oct. 11, 2018 — Cory Ketchum was awarded the Ralph White Scholarship for $1,000 at the Florida Turfgrass Association 66th Annual Conference & Show Sept. 18, at World Golf Village Renaissance in St. Augustine, Florida.

Ketchum decided on a career in turfgrass research while attending Santa Fe College in Gainesville, Florida, and will use the money from the scholarship to continue his studies. He is interested in teaching new generations of turfgrass students at a university while conducting research. Eventually, he looks forward to the possibility of managing his own research facility.

Ketchum’s strong work ethic and sense of adventure allow him to take chances. He says, “I’m willing to jump into difficult situations, such as the time I went to work as a summer turfgrass breeder intern for Barenberg, USA, in Albany, Oregon, 3,000 miles away from home. I didn’t know a soul in Oregon, but my family had taught me to live beyond my comfort zone. Because of the knowledge I gained there, I have been working with breeding cool season grasses such as rye grasses used to overseed southern golf courses.

“With the scholarships awarded by the Florida Turfgrass Association, the success that I strive for in my career is attainable, and it will help me to make a difference by making life better for everyone who enjoys the many benefits provided by healthy turfgrass,” Ketchum says.”

LAKELAND, Fla., Oct. 11, 2018 — Jamie Buhlman was awarded the Bill Entwistle Sr. Scholarship for $1,000 at the Florida Turfgrass Association 66th Annual Conference & Show Sept. 18, at World Golf Village Renaissance in St. Augustine, Florida. She is currently enrolled in the University of Florida, where she earned her undergraduate degree and is now working on her master’s degree.

While studying for her bachelor’s degree, Buhlman worked in several labs and departments within the University of Florida, including Plant Pathology, Microbiology, Entomology and Agronomy. Buhlman say, “The time I spent working in Dr. Kevin Kenworthy’s lab made one of the biggest impacts on me. I was especially impressed by the way my co-workers embraced UF’s position as a land-grant university and its purpose to contribute to the industries and communities throughout Florida. The spirit of collaboration and team effort to make significant and positive impacts on the turfgrass industry inspired me to make my own contribution.

“My position in the turf breeding program has provided amazing opportunities to begin to connect with people involved in all stages of turfgrass production, from researchers and extension agents to sod producers, golf course superintendents and homeowners. For my master’s project, I am working directly with sod producers to collect samples of ‘Floratam’ and ‘Bitterblue’ St. Augustinegrass, analyze them using molecular markers and test them for the presence of sugarcane mosaic virus,” says Buhlman.
LAKELAND, Fla., Oct. 11, 2018 — For the second year in a row, Mark Kann was awarded the Col. Frank Ward Memorial Scholarship for $1,500. He is currently enrolled in the University of Florida working toward his master’s degree.

Kann says, “Receiving FTGA Scholarships helps me to complete one of my long-term goals. Obtaining my master's degree has been a difficult journey but one that is well worth the time and effort.”

Kann is currently conducting research vital to the golf and turfgrass industries under the supervision of Dr. J. Bryan Unruh. He says, “I am working to bring the aspect of social science into the turfgrass industry—to understand the attitudes and behaviors of turfgrass managers regarding best management practices, their implementation and educational programs that support them. The outcomes from my research will help faculty and extension personnel from the University of Florida continue to develop educational programs to further improve BMP implementation and lessen the negative environmental impacts of turfgrass management.

“I plan to teach golf and sports turf management in the spring semester, but those credit hours are not covered by the Employee Education Program. I really enjoy teaching, and I feel that I am able to connect with the students due to the experience I have in the turfgrass industry. I can bring real-world experience that helps them to understand the concepts of turfgrass management in a more comprehensive manner, says Kann.”

Boeri says, “My thesis project is focused on the evaluation of bahiagrass, where I am testing new cultivars with superior turf qualities for herbicide tolerance, physiological responses under drought conditions and root characteristics.
“I recently submitted a request to present my research at the Crop Science Society of America’s international annual meeting being held Nov. 4–7, 2018, in Baltimore, Maryland. This will be an invaluable opportunity to keep increasing the level of my communications skills. The financial support from FTGA is crucial for my participation in this event.

“Meeting new people at the conference who are working in the same area and making connections with them will enrich my vision of my current research, the turfgrass industry in the United States and turfgrass science.”

After earning his master’s degree, Boeri is planning to pursue a Ph.D.
